Although people were still wearing flip flops down in the valley, up on the glacier the theme was to put on their winter boots and shred, test and party!
During the last weekend 13.000 of motivated snowboarders and skiers were flocking to the Kaunertal glacier to start the coming winter season and were welcomed by a sunny and blue sky. People were testing the brand new hard goods for the season 2008/09 for free from more than 35 brands at the Testival stations, were watching the contests or were just hanging out in the sun
The completely new park set up including new rails of the schneestern crew was definitly a highlight. The pro kicker line and the park will stay now for the whole season and will be enlarged on a regular basis.
The thousands of people didn’t just come to the Kaunertal because of the snow but also for the parties in the famous party tent in Feichten, hot movie presentations as well as sideevents such as Bagjump. Bands such as Texta and Russkaja made the partynights more than successfull with more visitors than ever before.
THE CONTESTS
The new format with the BIG PARK mini shred contest and the mini shred amateur contest was very well accepted by the riders. The registration list was already packed one week before the start of the Kaunertal Opening. At the BIG PARK mini shred contest on Saturday October 18th 2008 10 invited ski and snowboard pro’s were competing with some „Lucky Chicks & Bastards“ for the following titles: best men overall, best woman overall, best line, best trick and best rookie. After a long and hard contest day with lot’s of impressing tricks in the kicker line and mini shred the following riders succeeded and were rewarded with all in all USD 8.000,- for their perfomances.

Continuing with the mini shred amateur contest on Sunday, 30 freeskiers and 30 snowboarders were showing their skills on the obstacles and boxes. It was a tough decision for the judges but in the end the following riders made it to the top three and received awesome goodies and prices.

SIDEEVENTS
According to the wise saying „fun when the job is done“ people were partying hard after a tough day up on the mountain on friday and saturday.
On Friday evening the partycrowd was drawn to the party tent to watch the premieres of „READY“ by Absinthe films and „AESTIVATION“ by Brokenradio Films and Headbud Productions. Musical wise the locals Viva La Muerte and the hip hop crew Texta from Linz made the people move their bodies and cared for the right vibe.
The Saturday evening program got started by the movie presentations of „OVERSEAS“ by Pirate Movie Productions and „CLAIM“ by Matchstickproductions. After the UK punkrockers Failsafe the mood in the party came to it’s highlight with the energetic and funny show of Russkaja!
Visitors were also stoked by the new sideevents „Make Your Own Video“ and the Bagjump. The results of the four movie crews will be presented in abouut one week on www.kaunertal-opening.at.

All in all the promoters of the event are more than satisfied with the success of this years Kaunertal Opening with it’s new ideas and is especially proud about the big amount of visitors. They are looking forward to a Kaunertal Opening 2009 together with the Kaunertaler Gletscherbahen and the people of Feichten. The date for next year is already fixed from October 16th to 18th 2009!
